Getting the paper off is only half the job. The other half is what is left behind.
Then the wall gets repaired and sealed with a primer made for the job. Skip that step and the wall shows every scar under the new paint.
Get a Free EstimateMany older homes have paper that went up straight onto unprimed drywall. That is the hard case. The paste bonds to the drywall's own paper facing, not to a sealed surface.
When that paper comes off, it can take the face of the drywall with it. You are left with torn brown paper and fuzzy spots. Paint put straight over that will bubble and look rough.
Steamers and scrapers help, but they also make it easy to gouge the board. Most of the repair work we see after a DIY attempt comes from too much force in one spot.
Torn drywall paper soaks up water from paint and swells. It has to be sealed with an oil or shellac based primer made for damaged drywall first. After that it can be skimmed smooth and painted like any other wall.
Two things matter if your home is older. Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint on or under the walls. The EPA requires certified lead-safe work practices when that paint is disturbed during renovation.
The CPSC also notes that asbestos "may be present in textured paint and in patching compounds." Their use was banned in 1977. Sanding or scraping those surfaces can release fibers. See the CPSC guide to asbestos in the home for details.
Most homes in newer Cypress communities are well past that window. If yours is not, we talk it through before any scraping starts.
Most people remove wallpaper because they want a fresh color. Once the wall is prepped, our crew can paint it the same week. See our interior wall painting service for how that part works.
Deeper damage like cracks, holes or loose tape joints is covered on our drywall repair and prep page. If you want one wall to stand out, look at accent wall painting too.
Cypress Supreme Painting is family owned and veteran owned. We have over 30 years of experience in Cypress and northwest Houston. Wallpaper removal is part of our interior painting work. One crew handles the room from bare wall to final coat.
Same crew, same standards, across every community we serve.
It is possible, but we rarely recommend it. The paint can loosen the paste and the seams often show through. Removing it gives you a wall that holds paint for years.
A single room is often one to two days. Tough paste, several layers or torn drywall can add time. We would rather let the wall dry fully than rush the primer.
It can if the paper went on over unprimed drywall. That is why we test a corner first and repair any torn spots before painting.
Yes. Those rooms are common because older vinyl papers were popular there. Humidity can make the paste stubborn, so prep takes a little longer.
No. Many homeowners go about their day. We protect the room, keep the work area tidy and walk you through it when we finish.
